Maida Vale Blaze: Substation Fire Destroys High-Voltage Cables and Sparks Smoke Alert

Emergency services were called to Cunningham Place and Aberdeen Place in Maida Vale this afternoon after a fire broke out at an electrical substation, destroying three metres of high-voltage cable and prompting a public safety alert.

16 Calls, Crews from Paddington and Harrow

London Fire Brigade’s Control Room began receiving calls at 2:11pm (12 May), with 16 reports logged as smoke began to rise from the scene. Crews from Paddington and Harrow fire stations were swiftly mobilised.

The fire was declared under control by 5:46pm, but a visible plume of light smoke prompted health advice to nearby residents.

Keep Doors and Windows Closed, Residents Told

Station Commander Paul Meyrick, who attended the incident, said:

“There was light smoke in the vicinity of the substation fire so residents were advised to keep windows and doors shut.”

There were no injuries reported, and the exact cause of the fire is under investigation.

Investigation Underway

Investigators are working to determine what sparked the blaze, which destroyed a critical section of high-voltage cable within the substation infrastructure.

Local utility companies have also been alerted and are assessing potential impacts on local power supply, though no widespread outages were confirmed at the time of reporting.
