Commuters were thrown into chaos this morning as two of the UK’s major train stations – Cardiff Central and Manchester Piccadilly – were hit by severe disruptions, causing widespread delays and cancellations.
At Cardiff Central, a system signalling failure led to major delays, with all services either cancelled, delayed by up to 30 minutes, or revised. Services between Cardiff, Penarth, Barry Island, Caerphilly, and Queen Street have been affected.
Initially, National Rail expected delays to clear by 8:30am, but they have now warned disruption could persist until mid-morning.
A National Rail spokesperson said:
“Trains running between Cardiff Central and Penarth / Barry Island may be cancelled, delayed or revised. We apologise for the disruption caused.”
Meanwhile, in Manchester, a points failure between Manchester Piccadilly and Guide Bridge has blocked some railway lines, leading to significant delays of up to 60 minutes on Northern and TransPennine Express services.
Trains between Manchester Piccadilly, Hadfield, Stalybridge, and Rose Hill Marple have been severely impacted, with some services cancelled altogether. Rail replacement buses have been requested.
National Rail added:
“Major disruption is expected until 10:00am. Trains between Manchester Piccadilly and Huddersfield / York may also be cancelled, delayed, or revised.”
