Emergency services have launched a major response after a man fell ill from an ‘unknown substance’ near Salisbury. The incident occurred on Charles Road, Durrington, at around 5 pm on Friday, drawing a significant number of 999 crews to the scene from Hampshire,Wiltshire and Avon Fire and Rescue.
Witnesses reported seeing emergency personnel donning full hazmat suits and breathing apparatus as they entered the man’s property. EOD officers were also stationed at a ‘rendezvous point’ at Durrington C of E VC Junior School.

In a statement, a Wiltshire Police spokesperson said:
We are currently in attendance with the Fire and Ambulance services at an address in Charles Road, Durrington, following a report of a man falling ill after coming into contact with an unknown substance. There is not thought to be any threat to the wider public at this stage. As a precautionary measure, a cordon has been put in place. Members of the public are asked to stay away from the area. We will provide further updates in due course.”
Residents living in the vicinity have been told to remain indoors for their own safety, while Charles Road remains closed in both directions, with police officers guarding the area.

Locals expressed their concern and confusion as the large-scale emergency response unfolded. One resident reported being advised to stay inside and avoid contact with the scene.
Authorities have not yet disclosed what the substance may be or how the man came into contact with it. Investigations are ongoing, and the public is urged to avoid the area until the situation is resolved.
