Around 70 firefighters and ten fire engines tackled a large fire on Richmond Road this evening after a mixed-use three-storey building went up in flames, prompting a major emergency response and significant travel disruption.
The London Fire Brigade said it received 34 emergency calls beginning at 4:38pm on Friday, 18 July, reporting flames and heavy smoke pouring from a property on Richmond Road, TW1. Crews from Richmond, Twickenham, Chiswick, Acton, and surrounding stations were quickly mobilised, with a 32-metre turntable ladder from Clapham used as a water tower to douse the blaze from above.
Public Safety Warning and Traffic Disruption
Due to the large amount of smoke, residents were advised to keep windows and doors closed. Several road closures remain in place, including Richmond Road, and are causing significant traffic congestion in the area.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said:
“We’re urging people to continue avoiding the area while firefighters finish making the scene safe. Road closures will remain in place into the evening.”
Cause Under Investigation
At this stage, the cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated by fire officers.
Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is encouraged to contact the London Fire Brigade or local authorities.
