Man Charged with Speeding and Drink Driving on New Year’s Day

A man caught speeding and driving under the influence on New Year’s Day has been charged.

Nerijus Kavaliunas, 34, of Borodin Close, Basingstoke, was stopped by police after his Volkswagen Polo was recorded traveling at 96 miles per hour on the M4 just after 2am on January 1.

A roadside breath test revealed Kavaliunas had 170 micrograms of alcohol in 100 milliliters of breath—over four times the legal limit of 35 micrograms.

Police seized the vehicle, and his two passengers were transported to Gablecross Police Station for their safety.

In custody, a subsequent breath test recorded 161 micrograms of alcohol. Kavaliunas was charged with both drink driving and speeding.

He was remanded in custody and is set to appear at Swindon Magistrates’ Court today (January 2).

A police spokesperson said:

“This case highlights the dangers of drink driving and the consequences of excessive speed. We are committed to keeping our roads safe and urge all motorists to act responsibly.”

Kavaliunas now faces potential penalties, including a driving ban, fines, and possibly further legal consequences
