A major emergency response is under way this evening after a minivan collided with a tram on Kingston Road near South Wimbledon.

The crash happened shortly before 4pm on Tuesday, August 26, prompting a response from all three emergency services.

Witnesses reported seeing at least one ambulance leave the scene under blue lights, raising fears of serious injuries.

Passengers potentially injured

The Merton Cycling Campaign, who were among the first to highlight the incident on social media, suggested the crash may have occurred after the driver of the minivan allegedly disobeyed traffic signals.

They added that, because the tram was approaching Wimbledon station at a busy time, there were likely to be many passengers standing, meaning a higher risk of injury.
