‘Miracle’ Survival After Gas Explosion Destroys House in Ilford

A dramatic gas explosion destroyed a house on Ley Street, Ilford, on Tuesday evening, blowing off its roof and sending debris flying across the street. Despite the severity of the blast, residents are calling it a “miracle” that no one was seriously injured.

The explosion, which occurred around 4:09 pm, engulfed the terraced house in flames. Two people were rescued from the first floor by firefighters, while five others managed to escape. Emergency services, including eight fire engines and 60 firefighters, responded to the scene and brought the fire under control by 6:23 pm.

Witnesses Share Accounts of the Blast

Hamid Sheikh, 34, who owns a neighboring property, described his shock:
“I got to the scene as quickly as I could. When I heard it was an explosion, I couldn’t believe it. My first worry was for my tenants. The blast was big, and they were just a few feet away. It’s a miracle no one was hurt. I hope there is a full investigation into how this happened.

Zubair Aslam, 27, who lives two doors down, echoed the sentiment:
“I’m very thankful we are okay. It was really scary. We had to evacuate but are back now. We are still in shock.”

Reports indicate that a neighbour had smelled gas in the weeks leading up to the explosion, but she was away on holiday when the incident occurred.

Fire Brigade and Police Response

Station Commander Darren McTernan, leading the firefighting efforts, praised the swift response of his team:
“Crews worked hard to bring this fire under control. Our 32-metre turntable ladder and drone team were invaluable in managing the situation from above. We will remain on scene to ensure safety and investigate the cause of the fire.”
