Newly released images of the upcoming Piccadilly Line trains have provided an exciting glimpse into the future of the London Underground, featuring modern amenities like air conditioning and more spacious carriages. The photos, shared by Mayor of London Sadiq Khan on social media, show the sleek design of the new trains, which are expected to be introduced in 2025.
The new trains will feature wider doors, walk-through carriages, and enhanced digital display boards to help passengers navigate their journeys more effectively. The images highlight shiny new interiors, promising a significant upgrade from the existing Piccadilly Line trains that have been in service since 1975.
The new fleet of 94 trains is part of a broader initiative by Transport for London (TfL) and Siemens Mobility Ltd to modernize and expand the capacity of the Piccadilly Line, improving frequency, reliability, and overall comfort for commuters. The new design aims to accommodate the growing number of passengers, which can see a 23% increase during peak travel times, by offering more trains and reducing overcrowding.
One of the most notable improvements is the addition of air-cooling systems to make travel on the line more comfortable. Unlike traditional air-conditioning, the new system will provide temperature control without regulating humidity. This approach referred to as “air-cooling,” utilizes vapour-compression refrigeration to maintain a target temperature inside the train based on the ambient conditions.
Mayor Sadiq Khan said on X (formerly Twitter), “The new Piccadilly Line trains will be state-of-the-art, more spacious, and for the first time ever for a Deep Tube train—fitted with air-conditioning. Expect wider doorways, walk-through carriageways, and enhanced digital screens so you are always on top of your journey.
The fleet’s introduction marks the biggest upgrade for the line in decades, with a focus on enhancing passenger experience and increasing environmental sustainability. The new trains are designed to reduce energy consumption by 20%, contributing to TfL’s efforts to support decarbonisation across the network.
While the air-cooling system won’t offer the full comfort of traditional air-conditioning, it still promises a considerable improvement over the hot and stuffy conditions passengers have been accustomed to on London’s Tube. The target temperature of the carriages will adapt based on the outside conditions; for instance, at an ambient temperature of 10°C, the interior of the train will aim for a comfortable 19°C, according to a response to a Freedom of Information request made to TfL.
The new trains are expected to transform journeys on the Piccadilly Line, which runs from Heathrow Airport through central London to Cockfosters in the north, providing an upgraded and modern service for both daily commuters and tourists alike. As Londoners eagerly await their launch next year, the new Piccadilly Line trains are set to become a key feature of the capital’s ongoing transport modernization efforts.
