Emergency services were called at around 7.25am to a report of a three vehicle collision near to junction 3a southbound.
A red Fiat Punto, a white Renault traffic van and a Mercedes HGV were involved.
A man in his 40s was taken to hospital by ambulance, where he was sadly later pronounced deceased. His next of kin has been informed.
There were no other injuries reported.
