Prison Officer at Wellingborough Caught After Romantic Encounter with Inmate

A romantic escapade involving a prison officer and an inmate at HMP Five Wells has culminated in legal repercussions, unveiling a hidden relationship that has shocked the local community. Rachel Stanton, a 31-year-old trainee security manager from Irthlingborough, found herself at the centre of a scandal after prison authorities uncovered evidence of her liaison with Edwin Poole, a convicted armed robber serving a 10-and-a-half year sentence.

The affair came to light following the discovery of three intimate photographs and a sexually explicit letter during a routine cell inspection. Further investigation into the jail’s CCTV footage revealed that Stanton and Poole had spent an hour together in a storeroom, confirming suspicions about their relationship.

Stanton, who pleaded guilty to wilful misconduct in a public office, faced sentencing at Northampton Crown Court. Despite the personal nature of their relationship, which has resulted in a child, Judge David Herbert KC underscored the gravity of Stanton’s breach of trust.

Addressing the court, defense lawyer Lee Egan highlighted that Stanton did not smuggle contraband nor exploit her position beyond the relationship. He portrayed her as an inexperienced officer, who at the time was being considered for advanced training to manage an entire prison landing.

The relationship began sometime before its discovery in July 2022, leading to Stanton’s immediate suspension and Poole’s transfer to another facility. Despite their continued contact post-disclosure, the couple has since separated.

This case has raised significant concerns about staff conduct and security protocols within the prison system, prompting a review of employee training and oversight at HMP Five Wells.
