Kent County Council has confirmed that Ramsgate Tunnel will remain closed to all traffic for the foreseeable future following extensive damage caused by a vehicle collision and fire on the evening of Friday, 27 June.
The blaze inflicted serious damage to electrical systems, lighting, communication lines, and the road surface, rendering the tunnel unsafe for use. Contractors are currently working on-site to assess structural integrity and restore power and communication networks.
“We are incredibly grateful to the emergency services for their swift and professional response,” a council spokesperson said. “Public safety is our top priority, and we will not reopen the tunnel until it is deemed fully safe.”
While closed, Kent County Council will take the opportunity to carry out additional maintenance and infrastructure improvement works within the tunnel, streamlining future projects and minimising long-term disruption.
Diversion in Place
Motorists are being advised to follow the official diversion route:
Canterbury Road East → London Road → Grange Road → St Augustine’s Road → Paragon → Royal Approach → Military Road
Do Not Enter the Site
The council has urged the public not to attempt to visit or enter the tunnel, as it remains restricted to authorised personnel only and poses ongoing safety hazards.
