The Royal Navy has named Lieutenant Rhodri Leyshon, 31, as the serviceman who tragically died after a helicopter crash in the English Channel during a training exercise on Wednesday.
Lt Leyshon was aboard a Merlin Mk4 helicopter when it ditched into the water while escorting a royal ship as part of a night-flying operation. While two other crew members were rescued and taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Lt Leyshon tragically lost his life.
The Ministry of Defence has launched an investigation into the crash, which occurred during a routine training exercise off the coast of Dorset. Lt Leyshon had been a valued member of the Royal Navy, known for his skill and dedication to his duty.
Tributes have poured in from fellow servicemen and women as well as members of the wider military community, who mourn the loss of a talented pilot and colleague.
