A reckless motorists who ignored warning lights at an automatic level crossing between Rye and Ashford International has caused serious damage to the crossing’s control systems, leading to widespread disruption to both rail and road traffic.

The incident happened at around 9:00pm on Tuesday evening, when the driver ran the gauntlet of the closing barriers, narrowly avoiding a collision but destroying part of the mechanism in the process.

Engineers were unable to access the site immediately due to severe traffic congestion caused by the crossing failure, delaying repair work. The barriers remain out of service, forcing the closure of all rail lines through the area.
