Serial Arsonist Strikes Lower Manhattan: 4 Fires Set in 80-Minute Crime Spree

A dangerous series of arson attacks struck Lower Manhattan in the early hours of January 10, 2025, as an unidentified suspect set four separate fires within an 80-minute period, targeting police vehicles and public spaces.

Timeline of the Manhattan Arson Incidents

The first incident occurred at approximately 2:20 AM near 254 Broadway, where the suspect deliberately set fire to a marked NYPD emergency vehicle. Just 15 minutes later, at around 2:35 AM, another fire was started near 14 Murray Street, damaging an unoccupied civilian vehicle.

Escalating Pattern of Dangerous Behaviours

The arsonist’s destructive path continued as they moved toward the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall subway station at approximately 2:55 AM. There, they ignited a paper cup and threw it into a garbage can, potentially endangering subway commuters and transit workers.

Most Concerning Incident on J Train

The most alarming incident occurred at 3:40 AM inside a northbound J train at the Woodhaven Boulevard station. The suspect set fire to a pile of garbage next to a sleeping passenger before fleeing on foot. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in any of the incidents.

Police Response

The NYPD is actively investigating these connected arson attacks and seeking public assistance in identifying the suspect. “This type of deliberate endangerment of public safety will not be tolerated,” stated a police spokesperson.
