A 66-year-old man accused of a fatal knife attack at East Street Market in Walworth, southeast London, has been remanded in custody after appearing in court. Musse Ali, of no fixed address, is charged with one count of murder, two counts of attempted murder, and possession of a knife. The incident unfolded shortly before the Remembrance Sunday two-minute silence, sending shoppers fleeing in terror.
The Metropolitan Police has confirmed that the attack was not terror-related and urged the public to avoid speculation on possible motives. Authorities praised “brave members of the public who assisted police at the scene,” with reports indicating that market traders restrained the suspect until officers arrived.
Wearing a grey tracksuit, Ali stood in the dock as District Judge Nigel McLean addressed him. “The charges you face are matters that can only be tried in crown court in the main,” said Judge McLean. “My only function today is to formally send you to the Central Criminal Court where your trial will take place.”
Ali was remanded in custody to appear at the Old Bailey on Wednesday for a bail hearing, with a plea hearing scheduled for December 10.
