Staffordshire Police’s Road Crime Team (RCT) has shared a stark reminder about motorway safety after attending a road traffic collision (RTC) on the M6.
The incident, which occurred late last night, fortunately resulted in no injuries. However, officers emphasized that the outcome could have been far worse if the vehicle’s occupants had remained inside their car after uk/news/uk/Breaking" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="breaking" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked" data-wpil-monitor-id="131783">breaking down on the busy motorway.
Posting on social media platform X, Staffordshire Police RCT stated:
“This is a prime example why you do not sit within your vehicle if you break down on the motorway. Tonight we attended an RTC on the M6 where there were no injuries. Should the occupants have been sitting within the vehicle it would have been a very different story.
Safety Advice
Police have reiterated essential motorway breakdown safety tips:
- Move your vehicle to the hard shoulder or emergency refuge area if possible.
- Exit the vehicle using the left-hand (passenger) side and ensure all passengers do the same.
- Stand well away from the vehicle and behind a safety barrier if one is available.
- Call for assistance and wait in a safe location.
The Dangers of Staying in a Vehicle
Statistics from road safety organizations highlight the risks of remaining inside a vehicle during a breakdown. High-speed collisions on motorways often result in severe injuries or fatalities, particularly when stationary vehicles are struck.
Community Response
The social media post has garnered attention, with many praising the officers for their quick response and highlighting the importance of public awareness. One commenter wrote:
“A timely reminder. It’s easy to forget how dangerous motorways can be in moments of panic.”
Another added: “Grateful to hear no one was hurt. Everyone should take note of this advice—it could save lives.”
Ongoing Awareness Campaigns
Staffordshire Police and other road safety organizations continue to campaign for greater public awareness about safe actions during motorway breakdowns. Drivers are encouraged to stay vigilant, follow safety protocols, and educate others about the risks involved.
For further guidance on road safety, motorists can visit the National Highways website or contact local police for advice.
