Swanley Pensioner Attacked by Knife-Wielding Man Over Refused Laundry Request

A pensioner in Swanley was violently assaulted by a man armed with a knife after she declined his request to wash his tracksuit. The attacker, Michael Leahy, 61, has been sentenced to six years and three months in prison for the terrifying incident, which left the victim bruised and shaken.

The Attack

The assault occurred on February 23, 2024, when Leahy, intoxicated and holding a broken serrated blade, arrived at the victim’s home near London Road. The woman, who had previously helped him by washing his clothes, refused his latest demand. Enraged, Leahy grabbed her by the throat and lunged at her with the weapon, jabbing towards her face, stomach, and arms.

A struggle ensued, lasting several minutes, until another elderly resident intervened, helping the victim push Leahy out of the property. While the victim narrowly avoided serious injuries, she suffered cuts, abrasions, and bruising during the attack.

Arrest and Court Case

Police arrested Leahy at the scene, where the discarded blade was found. At Maidstone Crown Court, Leahy admitted to assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He denied the more serious charge of attempted wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but a jury found him guilty after a trial.

Sentencing

On December 10, 2024, Leahy was sentenced to six years and three months in prison. He must serve at least two-thirds of the sentence before being eligible for parole. Upon release, he will also be subject to a ten-year restraining order, protecting the victim from further contact.

Police Statement

Detective Constable Chris Welham commented:

“Leahy left his victim in genuine fear for her life, repaying her earlier kindness with a savage and terrifying attack. He claims to have no memory whatsoever of the assault, having told us that he had consumed large volumes of vodka as well as quantities of cocaine.

“I do hope the victim can take comfort and reassurance now that he has been jailed, and that when he does eventually get released, he will also be subject to a ten-year restraining order.”
