Three people have died after a migrant boat sank in the English Channel off the coast of Sangatte, near Calais, French authorities report. The tragic incident occurred early this morning, around 8am, approximately 2km from the shoreline.
Rescue teams responded immediately as around 50 migrants fell into the water. A joint search operation involving French and British authorities is ongoing, with 48 individuals rescued from the water. One person remains in critical condition.
Rescue Operation and Casualties
During the search operation, a passenger ferry spotted a man overboard and was able to recover him. The unconscious individual was airlifted to Boulogne-sur-Mer hospital by a French Navy Dauphin helicopter based in Le Touquet. Despite the efforts of medical teams, the victim was pronounced dead at the hospital.
French authorities have confirmed the current human toll stands at three dead, with 48 others rescued and one person injured.
Impact on Cross-Channel Services
The ongoing rescue operation has caused significant delays to Dover-Calais ferry services. Passengers are being advised that delays could extend up to 120 minutes as authorities manage the situation in Calais Port.
