Zoe Ball has announced she will step down as the presenter of BBC Radio 2’s Breakfast Show this December after six years at the helm.
Ball, 53, revealed her decision on her Tuesday morning show, saying:
After six incredible years on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show, it’s time for me to step away from the very early mornings and focus on family.
She confirmed that she will remain part of Radio 2, with further details about her new role to be announced in the new year. Ball’s final breakfast show will air on Friday, 20 December, just ahead of Christmas.
Scott Mills Takes Over
Radio 2 has confirmed that Scott Mills, who currently hosts the station’s afternoon show, will replace Ball as the new host of the Breakfast Show.
Mills expressed his excitement about the move, saying:
Zoe and I have been such good friends now for over 25 years and have spent much of that time as part of the same radio family here at Radio 2 and also on Radio 1.
“She’s done an incredible job on this show over the past six years, and I am beyond excited to be handed the baton.”
Farewell to Early Mornings
During the announcement, Ball reflected on her time as host, describing her six-year tenure as a “wild ride” full of “laughter, good times, and tough moments.” She also expressed gratitude to her listeners and colleagues, whom she described as “like family.”
However, she admitted one thing she won’t miss is the early starts:
“I won’t miss the 4am alarm call, if I’m completely honest. You know I love you all to bits.”
Listeners React
Fans have taken to social media to express their gratitude and support for Ball, praising her warmth and energy on the breakfast slot. Meanwhile, excitement is building for Mills’ new role, with many lauding his humour and longstanding rapport with listeners.
What’s Next for Zoe?
While Ball will leave the breakfast slot, her future role at Radio 2 remains under wraps. The BBC has promised further updates about her next chapter early in 2025.
Zoe Ball became the first female host of the Radio 2 Breakfast Show when she succeeded Chris Evans in January 2019. Her tenure has been marked by record listener numbers and her heartfelt connection with her audience.
