Visitors heading to Brighton & Hove’s iconic coastline this summer might spot a mixed bag along the promenade. The council admits it can’t maintain the entire seafront stretch, despite £280,000 secured for urgent upkeep.
£280k Boost for Essential Repairs but Not Enough
This summer, the cash will focus on the busy stretch from Hove Lagoon to Saltdean. Refurbishments include fixing railings, benches, and seafront shelters. The money will also cover safety inspections, cleaning, and improvements to promenades and public spaces. But don’t expect a full makeover. The council warns funds won’t cover the whole coastline. Maintenance will zero in on spots where public safety and access are at risk.
Seafront Maintenance: A Hardy Challenge
“The seafront is one of Brighton & Hove’s most loved and recognisable places but also one of the toughest to maintain,” said Councillor Birgit Miller.
Brighton’s seaside asset stretches miles and battles relentless coastal weather all year. Keeping it safe, functional, and looking good is a constant uphill struggle.
Looking to the Future – But Caution Remains
The council is hunting for extra funding streams to ramp up maintenance. Yet, with tight public coffers and rising costs, some parts of the seafront will likely show wear as the summer crowds arrive. For a city vitalised by its seaside charm, the fight between budget and upkeep is about to get very real this season.
