Call The Midwife Season 13: New Faces Join The Drama

The final episode of Call the Midwife series 15 hits BBC One this weekend (March 8) before the beloved show takes a break. The pause paves way for a gripping Second World War spin-off prequel and an upcoming film.

Helen George Dishes Brutal Truth About Call the Midwife

Helen George, who plays Trixie Aylward, has opened up on how the show tackles the tough realities of life. Speaking to Radio Times, Helen didn’t sugarcoat the drama’s raw edge.

“We’re afraid to be ugly on screen and in real life. But sometimes, real life is ugly. It’s dirty and painful and it’s f***ing hard – and all that is shown on Call the Midwife. Not grotesquely glamorised, not sensationalised. Just truthfully.”

The actress, who has been with the show since series one, also hinted that the show will change when it returns after the break.

“It is just a pause, because we know it’s coming back. But it won’t be the same, with different characters leaving and whatever.”

Is This the Real End for Call the Midwife?

Despite the break, fans shouldn’t panic just yet. Writer Heidi Thomas confirmed at the TV Choice Awards last month that this isn’t the final farewell.

“I don’t think it’s the last series in the classic form. But we are going to take a break from it for a couple of years,” she said.

“We’re doing a film set in 1972 or 1973, with most of the current cast. Then the series will return but with a slightly different setting because of NHS changes. It’ll still be East End London but possibly a small community hospital or GP practice. That’s what I’ll be working on later this year.”

What’s In Store for Saturday’s Finale?

The 8pm episode on BBC One and iPlayer promises plenty of drama:

  • Sister Veronica faces a life-defining choice after leaving the convent.
  • The Maternity Home prepares to shut, but Dr Turner fights to save vital equipment.
  • The Mulluck family champions rights for Thalidomide victims.
  • Cyril and Rosalind gear up for their wedding.

The Mullucks, who returned to the series last week after a 10-year hiatus, have been a fan favourite. Social media erupted with nostalgia:

  • “I love this family! I remember watching season 7 when little Susan was born!”
  • “How fun to get an update on the Mullucks!”
  • “So glad you keep revisiting this family.”
