A man in his 30s is in police custody following a shocking crash that left seven people hospitalised in Derby city centre on Saturday night.
Police Probe High-Speed Collision on Friar Gate
The smash involved a black Suzuki Swift and happened around 9.30pm. Derbyshire Constabulary have launched a full investigation. Officers are hunting for witnesses who saw the car driving around Derby before the collision.
Police have confirmed there’s no ongoing danger to the public. However, Friar Gate remains shut from the Curzon Street/Cheapside junction to Ford Street as inquiries continue. Authorities warn locals and visitors to avoid the area completely.
Emergency Services Launch Major Response
- Seven casualties were rushed to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre.
- East Midlands Ambulance Service sent seven ambulances, three paramedic cars, and their Hazardous Area Response Team.
- Paramedics treated seriously injured patients on-site before hospital transfers.
The police swiftly stopped and detained the driver shortly after the smash.
Eyewitnesses Describe ‘Absolute Carnage’
“It was utter chaos,” said one stunned witness. “People were covered in blood laid out on the pavements and roads. Truly horrific.”
Another reported hearing “screaming and yelling” during the panic.
A nearby pub-goer said: “Someone shouted that a load of people had been hit by a car. Everyone was panicking and checking on friends in other bars. People were crying and visibly shaken.”

Derby North’s Labour MP Catherine Atkinson said, “I am deeply shocked by reports that people have been injured in a serious incident in Derby city centre this evening. My thoughts are with those injured and I’m grateful to our emergency services.”
