Fire crews have been battling a fiery crisis at a glass manufacturing factory in Harlow after molten glass leaked from a furnace in the early hours.
Huge Operation Underway
The alarm was raised at 2:16am on Wednesday, March 4, prompting a major emergency response. At the peak, 13 fire engines from across Essex rolled up, including units from Harlow, Old Harlow, Stansted, and Brentwood, backed by specialist vehicles and drone support.
Edinburgh Way remains shut as firefighters tackle the molten glass leak. Authorities urge drivers to avoid the area and respect road closures for their own safety.
Blazing Heat Forces Relentless Crew Swaps
Assistant Chief Fire Officer James Taylor said: “Our firefighters are working really hard in incredibly difficult conditions to cool molten glass, which has leaked from a furnace. We need to continually change crews because the heat is so intense, which is why so many appliances are at the scene.”
The firefighters have succeeded in slashing the molten glass volume from a staggering 340 tonnes down to just 15 tonnes as of the latest update at 11:30am.

Shorter Than Feared, Thanks to Firefighters and Site Staff
“When we arrived at 2am, we thought this incident might drag on for days. But thanks to the amazing efforts of our crews and the on-site specialists working alongside us, we expect to wrap up by late afternoon,” A/CFO Taylor added.
The team is now closely cooperating with the Environment Agency to manage any contaminated water safely and prevent environmental damage.

Stay Clear, Give Crews Room to Work
Local residents and workers are thanked for their patience, but the public is reminded to steer clear of Edinburgh Way for as long as the closure remains in effect.
The fire service promises continued vigilance as they monitor the situation and work towards a safe, swift resolution.
