The parents of two talented grammar school boys have paid touching tributes to their “beloved” sons after a speeding driver was jailed for just 14 months following a fatal crash. Harrison Carter, 18, and George Stephenson, 17, both passengers in a Kia Niro, died when the car smashed into a tree at 76mph on a rural Lincolnshire road.
Speeding Driver Jailed but Families Left Devastated
Madeleine Lonsdale, 18, who had passed her driving test only 12 weeks earlier, was convicted of causing death by careless driving. The court heard she raced another car at 100mph earlier the same night and misjudged a bend on an unlit 60mph road. Despite the tragedy, Lonsdale delayed her first court appearance for two weeks to go on a skiing holiday and partied repeatedly after the crash in Marston, Lincolnshire, in the early hours of June 20 last year. She was jailed last month for 14 months and banned from driving for three years.
Touching Tributes: Families Remember Their Sons’ Bright Futures
Through Lincolnshire Police, Harrison’s parents Sarah and David described their son as a “devoted brother” and a “highly regarded champion golfer” who excelled academically and planned to study law at Durham University.
“Harry had the most wonderful smile and the biggest heart giving love and time unconditionally to anyone who needed it… He leaves a legacy of pure kindness,” said his parents.
George’s parents, Vicki and Bruce, spoke of their “devastation” and heartbreak. George was a talented water polo player preparing to study psychology at Sheffield University.
“George was generous, charming and kind, and he brought joy and laughter wherever he went… He truly leaves a giant-sized hole in all our lives,” said his family.
Crash Details Paint Grim Picture of Speed and Recklessness
Prosecutor Steven Taylor told the court that Lonsdale accelerated to over 70mph on a narrow country road with warning signs before failing to slow down for a sharp right-hand bend. The collision caused the car to flip onto its side. Both boys were declared dead at the scene. A passing motorist approached after the crash and found the boys motionless. Lonsdale suffered only a fractured wrist.
Families Slam “Senseless” Loss and Driver’s Actions
George’s mum said Lonsdale’s skiing trip before facing court “only added to the torment” for the families. Both sets of parents thanked the police, emergency services, and supporters for their help during this tragic time. While the sentence stands, many are left questioning if 14 months is enough justice for two promising young lives lost to reckless driving.
