Exclusive Probe launched after Corrosive Liquid Dumped on Sandown Beach Stairway

An investigation has been launched after a container of corrosive liquid (Industrial Dishwasher liquid) has been thrown down a beach stairway in Sandown this afternoon (Thursday April 26th). It is understood that the staircase is on Guadeloupe Road off Sandown High Street leading down to the beach have been covered in the corrosive liquid. Local residents reported the find to Police early this evening. Officers ahve attneded and called on a partner agency The Isle of Wight Wight and Rescue service. A fire applaince from Shanklin has been mobilsed and the area has been cordoned off to the public. It is understood that the liquid can cause severe burns and is classed as hazardous waste. After seeking advice from the services Hazmat officer firefighters have washed away the corrosive material and have made the area safe. Isle of Wight Council contractors have removed two plastic containers from the sealed off area. The matter is now being investigated by the Isle of Wight council and Police to trace how the liquid came to be disposed in this way. Anyone who has information is asked to contact Hampshire Police on 101.
