A Robinson R44 helicopter has crashed on the Isle of Wight this morning after taking off from Sandown Airport.

Crash Shortly After Take-Off

The aircraft, understood to have been on a private flight, had been airborne for only around seven minutes before it came down near Shanklin Road, between Shanklin and Whiteley Bank, shortly after 09:30.

Major Emergency Response

A large emergency service presence remains at the scene:

  • Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance

  • Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent

  • Isle of Wight Ambulance Service, with four ambulances, an operational commander and a rapid response paramedic

  • Fire crews from Shanklin, Ventnor and Newport

Police have closed Shanklin Road between Whiteley Bank and Apse Manor Road while the response continues.

Casualty Status Unclear

The number of people onboard and the extent of any injuries are not yet confirmed. Emergency responders are working at the crash site, and casualties may be airlifted to mainland hospitals if necessary.
