A luxury cruise turned into a nightmare after a 60-year-old man died following an altercation aboard the MSC Virtuosa shortly after it left Southampton on Saturday night.
Police confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched. Officers swooped on Southampton Docks this morning, arresting a 57-year-old man from Exeter on suspicion of murder. He remains in custody.
Man Dies After Shipboard Altercation
The fatal incident occurred around 8.30pm on Saturday evening, shortly after the MSC Virtuosa had set sail. The vessel was forced to return to Southampton, where police boarded to begin their enquiries.
The victim’s next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.
Police Appeal to Passengers for Information
Detective Chief Inspector Matt Gillooly, leading the investigation, said:
“We want to reassure you that this appears to be an isolated incident on board, and we thank the crew for their cooperation. If anyone on the ship witnessed anything or has information that could assist, please contact Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary quoting reference 44250193676.”
Police are appealing for anyone who was aboard the ship and witnessed the altercation, or has video footage, to come forward.
Shock for Cruise Passengers
Passengers, many of whom were preparing for a relaxing voyage, have been left stunned by the tragedy. Crew members are continuing to assist detectives as investigation continues.
