Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield has sparked fresh controversy in the JK Rowling transgender debate. While praising the “beautiful artists” behind the Harry Potter movies, Garfield took a thinly veiled swipe at the franchise’s creator during a recent podcast chat.
Rowling Criticised Amid ‘Inhumane Legislation’ Claims
On the My Life In Movies podcast, Garfield said, “The films are really good. I know it’s controversial and we shouldn’t be putting money in the pocket of inhumane legislation right now, through… she who shall remain nameless.”
His cryptic jab at Rowling refers to her backing of groups like For Women Scotland, which influenced the 2025 UK Supreme Court ruling on defining “woman” by biological sex. Garfield made it clear he struggles to fully support the franchise due to Rowling’s stance.
Cast Divided: Few Defend JK Rowling
Garfield’s stance highlights a growing split among the Potter alumni. Most leading cast members have distanced themselves from Rowling over her outspoken views on transgender issues. Only Ralph Fiennes, Helena Bonham Carter, John Cleese, and Tom Felton have publicly backed her. Notably, these stars had established their own legacies before Potter fame.
Meanwhile, some cast members who owe much of their success to the franchise have not shied away from criticising Rowling.
Franchise Rolls On Despite Backlash
The Harry Potter brand remains lucrative. A new series is set to premiere on HBO in late 2026, proving the saga’s appeal endures despite the ongoing controversies.
