Brian Thompson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was tragically shot and killed outside the New York Hilton Midtown hotel on the morning of December 4, 2024. The incident occurred around 6:45 a.m. as Thompson was arriving for an investor conference scheduled later that day.
Incident Details
According to witnesses, a masked gunman approached Thompson near the hotel’s entrance and fired multiple shots, striking him in the chest. The assailant fled the scene immediately after the attack. Emergency responders transported Thompson to Mount Sinai West Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The New York Police Department (NYPD) has launched a full investigation into the shooting, which is believed to have been a targeted attack. Authorities have not yet made any arrests and are actively searching for the suspect.
Thompson’s Legacy
Thompson had been with UnitedHealth Group since 2004 and rose to the position of CEO of UnitedHealthcare, the company’s health benefits division, in April 2021. Under his leadership, UnitedHealthcare expanded its Medicare Advantage offerings and became the largest provider in the United States, serving millions of members nationwide.
