Brazilian national Named in Fatal Whitechapel Collision as Detectives Appeal for Witnesses

Detectives have identified the victim of a fatal collision in Whitechapel as 36-year-old Matheus Piovesan, a Brazilian national, as they continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone with footage of the incident to come forward.

Police were called at 12:33am on Saturday, 6 July, to reports of a collision involving a car and a cyclist near the junction of Cable Street and Cannon Street Road, E1. Officers from the Metropolitan Police, alongside the London Ambulance Service and London’s Air Ambulance, responded to the scene.

Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, Matheus Piovesan tragically died at the scene. His family has been informed and receives support from specialist officers during this difficult time.

The vehicle involved in the collision failed to stop, prompting a significant investigation by detectives from the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU). As part of the inquiry, six people were arrested.

Three men—aged 45, 24, and 23—were arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene. They have since been released on bail pending further investigation. Two women and a man, who were also arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, were released with no further action.

Detectives urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident or has dash cam footage of the collision or the moments leading up to it to come forward. Witnesses are asked to contact police by calling 101 and quoting reference 230/06 July or reach out to the SCIU directly on 020 8285 1574.

The investigation remains ongoing, with officers continuing to seek vital information that may help piece together the circumstances of the collision.
