Helen Harrison, the partner of the recently suspended former MP Peter Bone, has been chosen to represent the Conservative Party in the upcoming Wellingborough by-election. This electoral event was triggered by Mr Bone’s suspension from the House of Commons amidst allegations of bullying and sexual misconduct, which he vehemently denies.
Mr. Bone, a long-standing Member of Parliament for Wellingborough since 2005, initially secured his position by a narrow margin. However, over the years, the constituency transformed into a Conservative stronghold, with Mr Bone winning a substantial majority in the 2019 general election.
The forthcoming by-election marks the tenth electoral challenge faced by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak since taking office in October 2022. The Conservative Party is determined to retain the Wellingborough seat, following losses in previously secure constituencies like Selby Ainsty and Tamworth.
Ms Harrison, a councillor in North Northamptonshire, has previously contended for a parliamentary seat in 2017, albeit unsuccessfully. Conservative Party chairman Richard Holden expressed his excitement over her selection, while Labour shadow minister Jonathan Ashworth criticized the decision, suggesting it was politically motivated.
The allegations against Mr Bone, which were substantiated by an investigation, include incidents of bullying and indecent exposure during an overseas trip. A recall petition, signed by over 13% of eligible voters, led to the by-election after Mr Bone’s suspension exceeded ten days.
Mr. Bone, characterizing the entire process as “bizarre,” steadfastly denies the allegations. The by-election is expected to take place in February, with Gen Kitchen (Labour), Ana Savage Gunn (Liberal Democrats), Will Morris (Green Party), and Ben Habib (Reform UK) among the confirmed candidates.
The outcome of the Wellingborough by-election will be closely watched, as it reflects the political climate in the area and the wider implications for the Conservative Party, which seeks to maintain its position in the constituency amid a challenging political landscape.
