A robber who terrorised shop workers by brandishing a knife during a series of incidents has been sentenced to prison. David Tree, 31, of Golden Hill, Burgess Hill, targeted Co-op stores in the town during June and July 2022.

In each incident, Tree concealed his identity with a mask or balaclava before demanding money from staff members. The traumatic encounters left employees shaken and alarmed.

Detectives from the Specialist Enforcement Unit (SEU) successfully traced Tree’s vehicle, leading to his arrest. Following an investigation by Crawley CID officers, Tree faced charges related to his criminal spree.

At Lewes Crown Court on June 6, 2024, Tree appeared for sentencing after pleading guilty to two counts of robbery, one count of attempted robbery, three counts of possessing a bladed article, and one count of going equipped for theft. The court handed down a total sentence of three years and nine months.

The first robbery occurred at a Co-op store in Terracotta Lane on June 19, 2022. A masked man entered the store just before closing time, demanding money from the safe. On July 12, Tree returned to the same store, escaping with cash through a fire exit after further threats with a knife.

On July 16, he targeted a Co-op store on Junction Road, wearing a balaclava as the store prepared to open. Although he displayed a knife, he fled when unable to gain access. Tree returned to the same store on July 25, once again wielding a knife in front of staff.

Detective Chief Inspector Colin Garman emphasised the seriousness of Tree’s actions: “David Tree carried out a short series of robberies and attempted robberies on Co-op stores in Burgess Hill. His actions caused significant concern for staff members and the wider community. Our determination to catch him paid off, thanks to the diligent work of our Specialist Enforcement Unit officers.”

Garman added, “Shop workers should not live in fear due to thefts and violence. This case underscores our commitment to apprehending offenders and ensuring public safety. We are relieved that a dangerous criminal has been removed from our streets.”
