Rogue Trader Roofing Scam Targets Pensioners in New Ash Green

Residents of New Ash Green are being urged to remain vigilant following reports of a rogue trader scam targeting homes in the area. On 10 October, a pensioner living near North Ash Road was approached by a man who claimed they had a loose roof tile. Before the victim could give permission, the suspect climbed a ladder and removed several tiles, leaving a large hole in the roof. The victim was then pressured into handing over £1,500 after demands for payment were made.

The incident was reported to Kent Police on 18 October, and authorities believe other homes in the area may have also been targeted. The suspect is described as being in his 50s and was accompanied by a younger man, possibly in his late teens. They were seen travelling in a blue Honda CRV. The investigation remains ongoing.

In addition to this, Kent Police have received reports of similar suspicious activity in Edenbridge. In those instances, two men have been offering roof and guttering services door-to-door in areas such as Ridge Way. They were seen traveling in a white Peugeot Partner van.

Kent Police is advising residents to take precautions against doorstep fraudsters, who often offer to carry out unnecessary or substandard work. The police recommend the following measures to deter rogue traders:

  • Do not engage with individuals who knock on your door offering home or garden services. If you feel pressured or have any concerns, call the police.
  • Genuine companies will not demand cash upfront or ask you to visit a bank to withdraw money.
  • Use reputable traders who are members of the KCC Trading Standards-approved trader scheme, Trading Standards Checked.
  • Always ask for written quotes and verify that the tradesperson is affiliated with the company they claim to represent.
  • Contact at least three traders to obtain quotes and get a sense of the average price for the job.

If you witness a crime in progress, dial 999. For non-urgent reports involving suspected rogue traders, call 101 or contact the Citizens Advice Consumer helpline on 0808 223 1133.

Authorities are urging residents to remain cautious and report any suspicious activity to help prevent further incidents in the community.
