The M5 motorway is closed both ways after a serious collision near Weston-super-Mare, causing major delays during rush hour.

Police-Led Incident Shuts Key Stretch

Emergency crews rushed to the scene just after 11pm between Junction 21 (Clevedon) and Junction 20 (Weston-super-Mare) following a horror smash. Avon and Somerset Police launched an investigation and remain at the scene.

National Highways confirmed the southbound carriageway is shut from Junction 19 to Junction 21. Northbound is also closed between Junction 21 and Junction 20. Officers have warned the closures could last several more hours.

Severe Delays and Alternative Routes in Place

Motorists face heavy traffic and chaos. Police urge drivers to take diversions or avoid the area if possible.

  • Northbound: Follow the solid triangle diversion signs. Exit at J21, use A370 through Congresbury, West Town, and Long Ashton, then join A4 westbound towards Avonmouth and rejoin M5 at J18.
  • Southbound: Follow hollow circle signs. Exit at J18, head south via A4, A3029, A3070, then A4174 and A38 before rejoining M5 at J22.

Light vehicles can also use an alternative southbound route via J19, A369, A370, A4174, and A38 to J22.

Bristol’s Clean Air Charge Suspended

Drivers heading towards Bristol will benefit from the temporary suspension of the city’s clean air zone charge during the motorway closure.

“Emergency services are at the scene of a serious collision on the M5 between Junctions 20 and 21. The M5 has been closed in both directions, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes,” said Avon and Somerset Police.
