Rishi Sunak Criticised for Avoiding Parliament and Dodging Questions – UKNIP

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, faced criticism during a heated exchange at a Liaison Committee meeting on Tuesday for his avoidance of Parliament and absence during Prime Minister’s Questions (PMQs). The chairman of the Standards Committee, Sir Chris Bryant, questioned Sunak’s commitment to appearing in Parliament.

One of the main points of contention was Sunak’s decision not to announce the NHS workforce plan in Parliament and his absence from two consecutive PMQs. In response, Sunak defended himself, stating that he has always tried to announce important matters in Parliament. He also highlighted his upcoming commitments, including attending the NHS 75th anniversary service and the NATO summit in Lithuania.

During the exchange, Sunak asked Sir Chris if he believed a British prime minister should skip a NATO summit attended by world leaders. He also defended his decision to miss the vote on whether Boris Johnson lied to Parliament, stating that he had to attend a charity dinner for Jewish Care. However, several MPs who attended the same event managed to return to Parliament for the vote.

Sunak further admitted that he had not fully read a Privileges Committee report on allies of Boris Johnson undermining the panel’s work during an investigation into the former prime minister. Tory peer Lord Zac Goldsmith resigned as a minister after Sunak asked him to apologize following his mention in the report. Sunak stated that he had read the report’s findings but not the entire three-page report.

Other topics discussed during the meeting included the cost of living crisis and the government’s plans regarding Channel crossings and the Rwanda policy for asylum seekers. Sunak defended the government’s efforts and pledged to challenge court judgments confidently and vigorously.

The Prime Minister has repeatedly defended the government’s plans, including those outlined in the Illegal Migration Bill, and assured the committee that progress is being made. However, critics highlighted the continued challenges, such as record numbers of migrant crossings and persistent inflation.

The exchange in the Liaison Committee meeting highlighted the tensions and criticisms surrounding Sunak’s parliamentary presence, decision-making, and policy outcomes. The issues discussed reflect ongoing concerns about transparency, accountability, and the government’s handling of critical matters affecting the country.
