Tragedy struck the city of Bamenda in Cameroon’s troubled northwest as gunmen opened fire at a busy junction, leaving 10 people dead and two others injured. According to the regional governor, the attack occurred on Sunday, and the perpetrators targeted individuals for allegedly failing to support local separatist movements.

Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants arrived in vehicles late in the evening and demanded people to lie on the ground. As some complied, while others attempted to flee, the gunmen unleashed a hail of bullets. The incident took place against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between the majority French-speaking government and separatist groups in the English-speaking region, who have been protesting alleged marginalisation since 2017.
