A routine weapons sweep at a park in Lewisham led to the shocking discovery of several dangerous items, including a lookalike gun, a large kitchen knife, and a red claw hammer. The find was made by members of the Lewisham Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) alongside local volunteers.
Discovery Details
The weapons were uncovered during one of the regular patrols conducted by the SNT and community members, aimed at locating hidden or discarded weapons in the area. The sweep, carried out on April 7, revealed the items stashed in the undergrowth of the park.
A black lookalike gun was found partially protruding from a plastic bag, concealed among branches and blue forget-me-nots. An officer photographed holding a large silver kitchen knife demonstrated the potential danger posed by the concealed weapon. Additionally, a red Amtech claw hammer was also discovered.
Safer Neighbourhoods Team Statement
The Lewisham Safer Neighbourhoods Team is part of the Metropolitan Police, focusing specifically on local issues within designated wards. These teams work closely with local authorities, community leaders, and residents to address problems like anti-social behaviour, graffiti, and disorder.
One officer on the scene commented:
“Regular weapons sweeps are essential to keep our community safe. The discovery of these items highlights the importance of ongoing vigilance.”
Community Response
Residents in Lewisham expressed concern over the discovery, with some highlighting the ongoing issue of concealed weapons in public spaces. One local commented on social media:
“It’s scary to think weapons are being stashed where families come to enjoy the park. Huge respect to the police and volunteers for their continued efforts.”
Another added:
“This just shows how important these weapons sweeps are. We need to keep our parks safe.”
Safer Neighbourhoods Teams (SNTs)
SNTs differ from other Metropolitan Police officers in that they focus exclusively on the ward they serve, and their priorities are set by the local community rather than police command. SNT officers cannot be reassigned to other duties within the borough or London, except in extraordinary circumstances.
Ongoing Efforts
The Lewisham SNT plans to continue its regular weapons sweeps and is urging residents to report any suspicious items or activities. Officers are also encouraging the public to participate in community safety initiatives to maintain a safe environment.
Appeal for Information
Anyone with information about the weapons found or those responsible for stashing them is urged to contact Lewisham Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111.
Protecting Public Spaces
The discovery has prompted renewed calls for increased community involvement in keeping local parks and public spaces secure. Local councillor Sarah Marshall commented:
“Lewisham’s parks should be safe for everyone. We support the ongoing efforts of the police and volunteers in making sure dangerous items are removed from our community.”
The SNT has reassured residents that they will continue patrols and maintain a strong presence to deter those seeking to hide or use weapons in public areas. Further updates will be provided as investigations continue.
