NHS Chief Warns Supplies Could Run Out ‘In Days’
Britain’s NHS is on the brink of running out of crucial medical supplies, with shortages potentially hitting within days. Sir Jim Mackey, NHS England’s chief executive, revealed he’s “really worried” about dwindling stocks of syringes, masks, and surgical tools – all hit hard by Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz and wider global shipping chaos.
Sir Jim warned: “Honestly, everything. Everything is at risk.” Some essential items could run out in just a matter of days, though others might last a few weeks. “It depends on what you’re talking about,” he said. “In every area, we’ve got enough to get through for a reasonable period… but it could be days for some products.”
Supply Chains Crippled by Iran Crisis
The Iran standoff is disrupting supply routes for around 75% of Britain’s imported pharmaceuticals. Many vital drugs rely on raw materials from China and India, whose shipments now face delays due to the Hormuz shutdown. This bottleneck is already pushing oil prices higher and threatening to worsen inflation.
Adding to the pressure, NHS stockpiles remain tight. High storage costs, expiry dates, and changing medical standards mean the health service can’t hoard supplies for years. Sir Jim stressed the fragile balancing act between preparedness and practicality: “You can’t hold years and years of supply.”
Pharmacies Demand Government Action as Medicine Shortages Bite
Independent Pharmacies Association chief Dr Leyla Hannbeck backed the NHS warnings, calling them a “validation” of ongoing fears. UK pharmacies have struggled all year to keep painkillers, antidepressants, blood pressure meds, and hormone therapies in stock.
“Medicine shortages pose a serious and growing threat to patients across the UK, and the Government must act now to ensure people aren’t left without vital treatments,” Dr Hannbeck said.
She called for urgent moves:
- Add 150 at-risk medicines to the export ban lists
- Appoint a medicines shortages tsar immediately
- Create a national Critical Medicines List
- Officially classify pharmaceutical shortages as a national security threat
“Pharmacies will do all they can, but without proper government support, our hands are tied,” she warned.
Government Plays Down Shortage Fears
A government spokesperson pushed back on Monday: “There are currently no reported medicine shortages as a result of the conflict in the Middle East.” They added that all departments are “actively monitoring emerging threats to supply resilience” and following established procedures to keep the health sector stable.
