An 86-year-old man has tragically lost his life in a road traffic collision in north Northumberland. The incident occurred just after 10 am on Saturday when Northumbria Police received a report of a two-vehicle collision on the A1, at the junction with the B6349 in Belford. The collision involved a white Hyundai i20 and a black Nissan Qashqai.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the scene, and upon arrival, they found the male driver of the Hyundai i20 had sustained life-threatening injuries as a result of the collision. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the driver was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.
The man’s next of kin have been notified and are currently receiving support from specialist family liaison officers during this difficult time.
The occupants of the Nissan Qashqai, including a man, a woman, and two children, were also injured in the collision but sustained minor injuries. They were taken to the hospital for treatment and have since been discharged.
To facilitate a comprehensive investigation, a section of the road was temporarily closed in both directions and was later reopened after several hours.
Northumbria Police are now appealing for witnesses who may have information about the collision to come forward. Sergeant Steve Armstrong of Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department expressed condolences, stating, “Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones of the man who has sadly lost his life in this tragic incident. We will offer them any support we can as they come to terms with their grief.
Sgt. Armstrong further explained that numerous inquiries are ongoing to determine the events leading up to the collision and the full circumstances surrounding it. The police are urging anyone who may have information about the incident or possesses dashcam footage from their vehicles that could aid the investigation to contact them.
