This evening (24th August 2024), emergency services were mobilised to the exit of the Beacon Shopping Centre car park in Eastbourne following a serious incident where a car exited the car park and collided with a nearby house. The impact was significant, with the vehicle ending up 50% inside the property.
Emergency teams from East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (ESFRS), South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb), and Sussex Police promptly responded to the scene. As a result of the incident, the road has been closed to facilitate the safe recovery of the vehicle and to ensure the structural integrity of the building.
Early reports suggest that, fortunately, there have been no serious injuries. However, the situation is still developing, and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Officers were called to Creaseys Drive at approximately 3.30am after receiving reports of a robbery involving three men. The 20-year-old local victim was not only robbed but also suffered stab wounds to his arm and leg during the attack.
The victim was swiftly taken to the hospital for treatment and has since been discharged. Chief Inspector Pauline Lane, District Commander for Crawley, described the incident as “shocking and violent,” emphasizing the distress it has caused the victim and his family.
“This was a shocking and violent incident which took place in the middle of the night,” said Chief Inspector Lane. “Fortunately, the victim will make a full recovery, but this is a distressing time for him and his family.”

Suspect Sought in Connection with Hastings Assault

Sussex Police are appealing for information after a serious assault on a woman in Hastings. The incident occurred after a woman in her 30s met a man in the town at around 6.30 pm on 12 June. The two then visited Yates on Robertson Street before returning to a property in St Leonards in the early hours of 13 June.
At the St Leonards address, the woman reported being subjected to a significant assault, which resulted in both internal and external injuries. The suspect is believed to have been captured on CCTV footage at Yates, and police are seeking the public’s assistance in identifying him.

Armed Police Respond to Firearm Scare in Brighton’s City Centre

Armed police were called to Brighton’s city center on Friday, August 9th, following reports of a man brandishing what appeared to be a firearm on Trafalgar Street.
A spokesperson for Sussex Police confirmed the incident, stating, “Armed officers responded to a report that a man was in possession of a suspected firearm in Trafalgar Street, Brighton on Friday, August 9 at around 2.50pm.”
When officers arrived at the scene, it was determined that the item in question was an imitation firearm. A 49-year-old man from Brighton was subsequently arrested on suspicion of possessing an imitation firearm. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.

Brighton Students Jailed After Importing Cannabis in Hidden Parcels

Two students in Brighton have been sentenced to prison after being found guilty of importing large quantities of cannabis into the city.
Yu Tang, 26, of Fleet Street, Brighton, and Jiangpeng Wei, 26, of Kingscote Way, Brighton, were involved in a scheme to bring cannabis into the UK from the USA and Canada. The pair were caught after detectives noticed that they were frequently collecting packages not addressed to them from various shared student accommodations across Brighton.
Upon searching these packages, officers discovered significant amounts of herbal cannabis, which had been double vacuum-packed and hidden among everyday items such as T-shirts. The investigation, which began in September 2023, led to the interception or seizure of over 40 parcels from the defendants’ addresses, with the total quantity of cannabis exceeding 40 kilograms.
In addition to the drugs, around £3,500 in cash was also seized during the investigation.

Eastbourne Man Convicted of Multiple Rapes and Assaults on Young Girl

An Eastbourne man has been convicted of multiple counts of rape and sexual assault against a young girl following a trial at Lewes Crown Court.
Keith Matthews, 60, of Tintern Close, Eastbourne, was found guilty of subjecting the victim, who was under 13 at the time, to a series of rapes and physical and sexual assaults in May 2020. The distressing incidents came to light when the young girl confided in a family member, leading to a report to Sussex Police.
Matthews was arrested and subsequently charged with four counts of rape of a child, along with one count each of assault by penetration of a child, sexual assault of a child, and cruelty to a child.
The jury reached a guilty verdict after a five-day trial, concluding on Friday, August 2nd. Matthews has been remanded in custody and is set to be sentenced on September 20th at a court to be confirmed.

Witnesses Sought After Fatal Motorcycle Accident Near Camber
Police are appealing for witnesses and information following a tragic fatal collision near Camber in East Sussex on Monday, August 12th.
Emergency services were called to the scene on Jury’s Gap Road, east of Camber, shortly after 12:20 pm, where a collision had occurred between a lorry and a motorcycle. Despite the efforts of the emergency responders, the motorcyclist, a 47-year-old man from Hythe, Kent, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed.
The lorry driver, a 46-year-old man from Romney Marsh, Kent, was unharmed in the incident.
