A 90-year-old woman has tragically died following a house fire in Plumstead, South East London, in the early hours of Monday morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Nithdale Road, SE18, at approximately 1:53am on April 14, following reports of a residential fire.

According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police, fire crews and paramedics attended the incident, and the elderly woman was taken to hospital, where she sadly passed away.

A police spokesperson said:
“Police were called to a report of a fire at an address in Nithdale Road, Plumstead at around 01:53hrs on Monday, 14 April. Emergency services attended and a 90-year-old woman was taken to hospital, where she sadly died.”

The circumstances surrounding the blaze are currently under investigation, and authorities have stated that a heightened police presence will be visible in the area as enquiries continue.

The London Fire Brigade has also launched a joint investigation with the police to determine the cause of the fire. The property remains cordoned off and forensics officers are working at the scene.

Community in Shock

Local residents have expressed their sorrow at the tragic news. One neighbour said, “She was a quiet and kind lady. It’s heartbreaking to hear what happened.”

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the victim as they work to inform next of kin.

A London Ambulance Service spokesperson said:
“We were called at 1.50am today (14 April) to reports of a fire on Nithdale Road, SE18.
“We sent a number of resources to the scene, including an ambulance crew, a paramedic in a fast response car, an incident response officer and members of our hazardous area response team (HART). We also dispatched a trauma team in a car from London’s Air Ambulance.
“Very sadly, despite the best efforts of our crews, a person was pronounced dead at the scene.”
