Residents across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight are falling victim to a sneaky phone scam where fraudsters pretend to be Amazon. The message is clear from Amazon:
“If you get a call claiming to be from us, it’s OK to hang up.”
Spot the Scam: How Crooks Trick You
- They demand payment over the phone or outside Amazon’s website – asking for bank transfers, credit card details, or gift card info.
- They might urge you to install apps for remote access or share a One-Time Password (OTP) sent to your device.
- They’ll try to steal personal details like your Amazon password or bank info, claiming it’s needed to “unlock” your account.
- Beware of fake emergencies like expiring subscriptions or unauthorised purchases, rushing you to act on the spot.
Remember: Amazon will never ask for OTP codes or bank details over the phone. If you get such a call, hang up immediately and contact Amazon through their official website or app.
What To Do If You’ve Been Targeted
- Check your Amazon orders online if you get unexpected messages about purchases.
- Report phishing emails to your provider or forward them to [email protected].
- Forward scam text messages or suspicious phone numbers to 7726 or your phone provider.
- If you’ve been scammed, get free, confidential support from the Victim Care Hub or call 0808 178 1641.
- Report crimes anonymously at Crimestoppers or call 0800 555 111.
- For fraud already committed, report it to Action Fraud or phone 0300 123 2040.
