Drivers who are self-employed and regularly venture into the recently expanded Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) will now have the opportunity to reclaim tax relief on the ULEZ charges. This revelation comes as a relief to those operating non-compliant vehicles who were concerned about the daily ULEZ fee of £12.50.

While London Mayor Sadiq Khan and Transport for London (TfL) introduced a scrappage scheme for all London residents, many individuals living in bordering boroughs but frequently commuting into the zone were excluded from this option.

A recent announcement by the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has brought positive news for self-employed drivers. The HMRC has confirmed that self-employed individuals are eligible to claim tax relief on their travel expenses, including ULEZ charges. This development offers a potential solution for those who have to enter the ULEZ zone regularly due to work-related activities.

Self-employed drivers can initiate the process of claiming ULEZ tax relief through their self-assessment tax returns. It is important to note that this tax relief does not apply to daily commutes or personal travel that isn’t work-related, as highlighted in reports by the BBC.

When addressing the topic of ULEZ charges and tax relief, the HMRC provided a statement emphasizing the criteria for claiming this relief: “Self Assessment customers are entitled to tax relief on travel expenses, including low emission zone charges if they have been incurred wholly and exclusively for the purposes of the trade. When a self-employed individual claims an allowable expense, the amount is deducted fully from their taxable profits.”

TfL also weighed in on the matter, acknowledging the potential tax deductibility of ULEZ charges. A TfL spokesperson shared their perspective with the BBC, stating, “Rules around tax deductible expenses will apply in the usual way to Ulez charges. This is a matter for HMRC but it is likely to depend upon the nature of the operation and circumstances around incurring the charge as to whether it is tax deductible, as is the case for other expenses.”

As more drivers navigate the challenges posed by emissions regulations and their associated charges, this recent announcement offers a practical solution for self-employed individuals who need to traverse the ULEZ zone while also managing their tax obligations effectively.
