Chaos on the roads as a lorry has brought traffic to a grinding halt amid heavy snow. Drivers are stuck in whiteout conditions on the A171 Birk Brow in North Yorkshire after two cars and two lorries blocked the route.

Road Closures and Mile-Long Traffic Jams

Police have closed the A171 and warned motorists to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary. Delays of up to 60 minutes are expected, with congestion stretching four miles back to the M25 junction 28 roundabout.

The A12 in Essex is also closed both ways between junctions 11 and 15 following a separate incident. Authorities say the road will remain shut through the evening as recovery efforts continue.

In addition, the A11 in Norfolk is closed northbound between Larlin and Attleborough due to a crash.

More Trouble Ahead: Surrey Lorry Breakdown Adds to Gridlock

In Surrey, another broken-down lorry is causing massive delays, especially on the M25 motorway. Though all lanes have reopened, drivers face tailbacks of six miles with an estimated 45-minute delay between junction 8 and junction 17 near Redhill.

“The broken down lorry has now left the carriageway,” said National Highways, but traffic officers remain at the scene managing the chaos.

Freezing Weather Makes Travel Nightmare Worse

Britain’s winter grip tightens with up to 10 inches (25 cm) of snow reported in some areas. The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snow and ice across the UK, and a cold weather health alert alongside warnings for temperatures as low as -12°C.

Locals in North Yorkshire, County Durham, Yorkshire, and Northumberland have woken to thick blankets of snow, with pictures showing deep drifts and iced-over cars. Commuters are battling treacherous roads to get to work, prompting official advice to consider alternative travel plans.

Police Urge Caution

Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on road closures and diversions.
