Members of the public have been hailed for their courage and swift action in assisting police after a man was convicted for a brutal attack on his then-partner in the street.
Arif Ahmet Alidov, aged 51, from Edmonton, faced trial at Wood Green Crown Court, where he was found guilty of multiple charges including attempted murder, threats to kill, assault with intent to rob, possession of an offensive weapon, ABH, and strangulation. He was subsequently sentenced to 26 years’ imprisonment at the same court on Friday, April 12.
The harrowing incident unfolded on July 6, 2022, when Alidov confronted his partner at her workplace, pulling her by her hair and attempting to drag her away. Despite the intervention of colleagues, Alidov persisted, pushing her to the ground and causing her to lose consciousness.
Later that day, he continued his reign of terror by threatening to kill her over the phone, ominously warning her against involving the police.
The situation escalated when, the following day, Alidov physically assaulted his partner again, this time stabbing her multiple times, leaving her in a critical condition. It was at this moment that members of the public intervened, restraining Alidov until police arrived at the scene.
Detective Constable Bex Heitlinger, who led the investigation, emphasized the severity of the case, highlighting the sustained violence inflicted upon the victim over multiple occasions. He expressed gratitude to the public for their courageous intervention, which undoubtedly played a crucial role in preventing further harm.
Heitlinger also seized the opportunity to encourage victims of domestic violence to seek help, emphasizing the availability of support services and urging individuals to reach out to authorities if they find themselves in danger.
The victim, thankfully, received life-saving treatment following the stabbing and was later discharged from the hospital.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of community vigilance and swift action in combating domestic violence, and underscores the critical role that public engagement plays in ensuring the safety and well-being of individuals within society.
