A drug-fuelled speeding motorcyclist has been jailed after killing a pedestrian in Darlington last year

James Mitchell was riding his bike illegally around Darlington on Saturday, February 11 with no insurance or driving licence. He was also loaded with cannabis whilst overtaking vehicles and performing ‘wheelies’.

At around 7pm that night, the victim was walking across Freeman’s Place while pushing his bike when Mitchell hit him at around 60mph.

The victim sustained serious injuries and sadly died at the scene.

After attending hospital for his own injuries, Mitchell was arrested and taken into custody.

The 29-year-old, of Kinghall Street, Darlington was later charged with causing death by dangerous driving following an interview.

He appeared at Teesside Crown Court for sentencing (May 10) and was handed a ten-and-a-half-year prison sentence.
