John Boddy, a 48-year-old bin lorry driver from Chatham, has admitted to causing the death of a pensioner in West Wickham. Boddy pleaded guilty to causing death by careless or inconsiderate driving at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 17.

The tragic incident occurred on the morning of September 20, 2022, near the junction of The Grove and West Wickham High Street. Police were called to the scene at around 7:20 AM following reports of a collision between a lorry and a pedestrian. The pedestrian, a man in his 70s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Bromley Council confirmed that the lorry involved in the crash was neither a council vehicle nor a contractor’s vehicle.

John Boddy will be sentenced at a later date, with further legal proceedings pending.

This incident has brought attention to the importance of road safety and the severe consequences of careless driving. The community remains saddened by the loss and is awaiting the final sentencing decision.
