A man who was arrested after a two-year-old boy died in a crash at the Gorrell Tank car park in Whitstable has been released on bail.

Emergency services were called to the busy town-centre car park on Sunday, 17 August, following reports of a collision involving a young child. Despite the best efforts of paramedics, the boy was pronounced dead at the scene.


Kent Police confirmed that a man was arrested in connection with the incident. He has since been released on bail while enquiries continue.

A police spokesperson said:

“We were called to Gorrell Tank car park in Whitstable on Sunday following a collision in which a two-year-old child sadly died. A man was arrested as part of our enquiries and has now been released on bail. Investigations remain ongoing.”

The car park, which is often busy with tourists and day-trippers, was cordoned off for several hours on Sunday as crash investigators examined the scene.

Tributes have begun appearing online, with local residents expressing shock and heartbreak at the tragedy.

Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from the area at the time of the incident to come forward.
