Motorist Charged with Murder After Engineer Fatally Struck Outside Liverpool Party

A man has been charged with murder after an engineer was reportedly deliberately run over outside a party in the Woolton area of Liverpool late on Friday night.

Martin O’Donovan, 46, was fatally injured in the incident, which took place around 11.45pm on April 18. Emergency services rushed to the scene after reports of a man being struck by a vehicle. Despite efforts from local residents and paramedics, Mr O’Donovan tragically died from his injuries.

Witnesses described harrowing scenes, with one woman heard screaming “that’s my brother,” while others desperately pleaded with the victim to “stay with us.” The incident occurred in a quiet residential street and has left the local community in shock.

Stephen Bates, 41, of Liverpool, was arrested at the scene and has now been charged with murder. Merseyside Police confirmed that he has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Liverpool Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday.

In a heartfelt statement released today, Mr O’Donovan’s family paid tribute to the man they described as a “skilled outdoorsman” who “lived life by his motto: ‘keep smiling’.”

“Martin was a loving, caring, fun, and intelligent son, brother and uncle, who would light up any room with his humour and presence,” the family said.
“He was highly devoted to his family and friends, and was always the first to offer a helping hand.”

Detectives are continuing to appeal for witnesses and any available CCTV or dashcam footage that may assist with the investigation.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Merseyside Police on 101, quoting reference number 1121 of 19 April, or to contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
