WW2 Bomb Scare Shuts Down Epsom Council HQ
A suspected World War Two bomb sparked panic at Epsom and Ewell Borough Council today. Staff were hurriedly evacuated after a member of the public dropped off the suspicious device at the council’s reception desk.
100-Metre Cordons and Mass Evacuations
Surrey Police wasted no time. They set up a 100-metre cordon around the building and called in the bomb squad. Nearby residents and council workers were swiftly evacuated as bomb experts raced to assess the threat. The surrounding area near The Parade was shut down, with officers warning the public to stay well away.
Bomb Squad Safely Removes Mortar Shell
Thankfully, what turned out to be a suspected WW2 mortar shell was removed safely, with no harm done. Surrey Police confirmed:
“The mortar shell has been safely removed from Epsom and Ewell Borough Council offices and the cordon has been lifted. Residents are able to go back to their homes and the town centre has fully reopened. Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation.”
